Kiren Rijiju Alleges Bangladesh-Style Unrest Plot in India, Targets Rahul Gandhi
Kiren Rijiju alleges a Bangladesh- and France-style unrest plot in India, while a video featuring Rahul Gandhi and Neha Bora sparks a political row over youth protests, democracy, electoral rights and the SIR controversy.
Rijiju said those allegedly involved in the dangerous conspiracy had forgotten that India was neither Bangladesh nor France. He asserted that a change of government was entirely possible in India, but only through elections and not through George Soros.
Rijiju shared a post on X along with a video featuring Rahul Gandhi and Neha Bora. The development follows a video message by Bora supporting the violent protests in Bangladesh, which surfaced on October 14.
Two days earlier, Bora had sent a video message congratulating the Socialist Students Front (SSF) of Bangladesh on its sixth Central Conference. In the message, she said India's Gen-Z movement had been inspired by the movement in Bangladesh. The SSF was active during Bangladesh's student movement and the developments surrounding the change of government.
In her message, Bora said, "Red salute to you. The Gen-Z movement taking place in India today first began in Bangladesh. You showed us the way, and we are grateful to you for that."
She added that the movement launched in Bangladesh was aimed at democracy and protecting voters' rights. According to her, the movement in which young people were participating in India was also a struggle to defend democracy and voters' rights.
Bora further claimed that young people in Bangladesh had been fighting against religious extremism and that India's Gen-Z movement was fighting the same battle. She said Dhaka University and Jahangir University were facing difficult circumstances amid increasing threats and attacks.
Drawing a comparison with Indian educational institutions, she alleged that central universities and other institutions in India were facing similar conditions, with students' rights being restricted on a large scale. She also criticised the push towards the privatisation of education, alleged saffronisation of educational institutions and the suppression of critical thinking.
The Bharatiya Janata Party had earlier alleged that Rahul Gandhi was conspiring to destroy democracy.
BJP leader Pradeep Bhandari said the developments in Bangladesh were clear, alleging that an Islamist group had used a mob to create chaos and attempted to dismantle the entire system. He said the group's objective was a change of government and alleged that Neha Bora also wanted a Bangladesh-style anarchic movement in India.
Bhandari further claimed that when Rahul Gandhi failed to bring his family to power through democratic means, he and his wider ecosystem began conspiring to destroy democracy in India. He alleged that Rahul's objective was not democratic protest but the legitimisation of anarchy.
Neha Bora has been active in several protests this year, including demonstrations over the NEET paper leak and opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In July, Bora came into the spotlight during protests organised by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) over the NEET paper leak. The demonstrations included demands for the resignation of the Education Minister. She also joined social activist Sonam Wangchuk in an indefinite hunger strike at Delhi's Jantar Mantar.
In October, Bora again attracted attention during protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and opposing alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.
On October 10, police detained her during a protest in Delhi. In a video released during her detention, she said, "I am in detention, not the movement." Videos of her speeches and participation in protests subsequently went viral on social media.
On October 12, Bora was seen at the forefront alongside Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra during an INDIA bloc march in Delhi. Rahul Gandhi was seen walking with his hand on her shoulder. She was also seen at a meeting at his residence.
The controversy has brought renewed attention to the political debate over the nature of youth-led protests in India, Bora's statements comparing Indian and Bangladeshi movements, and the BJP's allegations concerning Rahul Gandhi and the opposition's protest strategy.
